මන්දාකිනි (“Mandakini” English Translate Galaxy) FM was a commercial-free youth radio channel in Kandy’s region (Sri Lanka). Its mission was to introduce the latest Pop culture to youth, which happened to be broadcast from the founder’s bedroom. In the late 90s’, Pop and R&B culture was booming around the world. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the case for many areas of Sri Lanka. Unlike today, at that time most didn’t have smartphones, the Internet or iPods. Simultaneously, many struggled with cultural restrictions and lacked radio transmission infrastructure. We had no choice but to listen to traditional AM radio stations. Some were able to exchange music via audiotapes and CD’s however to afford a stereo system was a challenge for many people.

Therefore, many locals especially the younger generation were frustrated with traditional music and were craving for a change. Mandakini FM began as a simple solution for frustration and helped hundreds of music-lovers before its shutdown after 8 months in to operation.
